The ABCs of ADA

We at Signs By Tomorrow in Elgin consider ourselves to be ADA signage experts, frequently helping our clients navigate the often confusing world of government regulation. If you’re renovating, moving your business into a new space, or simply updating your signage, it’s best to give us a call so we can walk you through the dos and don’ts of ADA compliance.

In the meantime, here are some of the basic things to know about ADA.

What is the ADA?

The ADA stands for The Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law in 1990. Essentially, it’s designed to stop discrimination against anyone with a disability in every aspect of their life—work, school, transportation, etc. The ADA covers everything from requiring businesses to provide wheelchair access, to ensuring that the hearing-impaired are given a way to telecommunicate.

What does this have to do with signage?

Having proper ADA signage is important for two reasons:

1. It’s the law.

2. It invites clients and customers of all abilities to feel welcome and included.

What kind of signs need to be ADA compliant?

There are a lot of areas that require ADA signage, including:

  • Restrooms

  • Emergency Exits

  • Parking Facilities

  • Entryways

  • Elevators

To make sure your facility is fully equipped, call your personal ADA signage consultants at SBT.

How is a sign “compliant?”

Following the mandatory ADA rules isn’t difficult, but it can be complicated. Signs need to be hung a specific distance from the floor, be clearly visible and legible, include braille, among other things. You can find all the official standards at ada.gov, but call us for a quicker answer to your sign questions.

Can I add some personality to my ADA signage?

Yes! ADA signs do not have to be boring. In fact, we believe the best signs are the ones that elevate your personal brand. Add some whimsy or showcase your business’s personality through ADA signage—following the law can be fun.

And, at Signs By Tomorrow, custom work doesn’t mean extravagant cost: We’re equipped and ready to create your unique ADA signs at a great price.
