Fun things to do in and around Elgin this February

Winter doesn’t have to be dreary.

January is full of fresh starts and promises, while February is a grey, slushy mess that seems to drag by—and at only 28 days long! But what if, in 2025, we gave February a rebrand?

Instead of wishing away winter and waiting for spring, let’s make February FUN. Get out and about (or stay in and stay cozy) with these activities that transform Feb from flat to fab.

Gail Borden Public Library  

It’s no secret that Elgin has one of the best libraries in the country. Are you taking advantage of all Gail Borden has to offer? Treat yourself, your friends, or your family to a library date and explore some unexpected aisles. Travel, cooking, movies—it’s all at your fingertips, for free!  

Learn Something New! 

Take a dance class, stretch yourself at yoga, cook up a new recipe, or get messy at the pottery wheel at the Centre of Elgin—get out there and try something new this February.  

Get Cozy (and save money) 

Movie Marathon  

Pick a theme—Harry Potter, Marvel, Anne of Green Gables, etc.—and lean into it. Dress up, create a coordinating menu, or invite your friends. Make it festive, make it fun! 

Declutter  

Okay, okay, this one might not be as fun for everyone, but decluttering can be rewarding if you don’t put too much pressure on it! Decluttering is good for your mental health and your wallet, since you’ll become more aware of what you have and what you need.  

Host a Murder Mystery Night 
Take advantage of all your friends being stuck at home during one of the slowest months of the year and entice them to an unforgettable night in your living room. Serve murder with a side of good food, and you’re sure to have a merry February evening.   
 

Practice Gratitude 

If you do all—or none—of the ideas on this list, make sure of one thing: Find joy in the small moments. Whether you snuggle up with a good book or start training for a marathon, do things that make you happy this February (and always!).
