If you’ve ever stopped by our shop or called for a quote, chances are good that you’ve interacted with Jon, owner and operator of Signs By Tomorrow in Elgin, IL. He’s been running SBT Elgin since 2007, and we thought it was past time you got to know the man behind the counter.
Jon’s been running the shop for well over a decade, but his connection to SBT Elgin goes back even further. His dad, pictured here, started the business in 1999, running a successful operation for nearly ten years before transitioning to full-time grandpa and leaving Jon to make the signs.
A happy dad to three adventurous boys, Jon and his wife (and business partner), Elizabeth, are also busy wrangling a 10-month-old lab mix as they wait for the world to open back up.
We asked Jon to answer a few questions about his work:
Jon, on your best day, what is the most satisfying part of your job?
Seeing an excited customer. Our signs help our customers advertise and succeed. They are generally excited about these projects, and it feels good to make them happy.
What’s one of the most memorable signs you’ve helped create?
Years ago, we received a large order from a customer that had a very tight deadline. We worked 24 hours a day to hit the deadline while keeping our commitments to our other customers. But I realized that we couldn’t print fast enough, so I ordered a new large format printer—we even picked it up from the supplier that same day. We worked through the weekend and managed to ship the signs, on time, for a convention in Florida.
Why is a good sign a sign of good business?
It’s like saying that a restaurant with a dirty bathroom probably has a dirty kitchen: A sign is the first impression a customer will have of your business. If the sign is faded or falling apart, it won’t instill confidence in your customers.
You can (almost) always reach Jon at 847-742-9530. He’ll be happy to take your call.
